Mayan Ritual Table was inspired by a hieroglyph from the Temple of the Plumed Serpents at Xochicalco. The hieroglyph was thought to be the symbol of a sundial or an elementary measuring device that played a role in the delineation of time in their cosmology. I was captivated by the form integrating all three of the elemental forms, circle, triangle and square into one harmonious composition. I took this symmetrical, multi-elemental form and used it as a symbol for the ea.rth. I leveled the plane by using spheres representing the sun and the moon, deified in their cosmology (i.e. Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon). I represented the solar system by etching the northern, circumpolar constellation pattern into the glass table top.
